The faint-end of the galaxy luminosity function in groups

چکیده
We compute the galaxy luminosity function in spectroscopically selected nearby groups and clusters. Our sample comprises 728 systems extracted from the third release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in the redshift range 0.03 < z < 0.06 with virial mass range 1011 M⊙ < Mvir < 2 × 1014 M⊙. In order to compute the galaxy luminosity function, we apply a statistical background subtraction method following usually adopted techniques. In the r band, the composite galaxy luminosity function shows a slope α = −1.3 in the bright–end, and an upturn of the slope in the faint–end, Mr >∼ −18 + 5log(h), to slopes −1.9 < α < −1.6. We find that this feature is present also in the i, g and z bands, and for all explored group subsamples, irrespective of the group mass, number of members, integrated color or the presence of a hot intra-cluster gas associated to

From R-band images of 39 Hickson compact groups (HCGs), we use galaxy counts to determine a luminosity function extending to MR = −14.0 + 5 log h75, approximately two magnitudes deeper than previous compact group luminosity functions. We find that a single Schechter function (Schechter 1976) is a poor fit (χν > 4) to the data, so we fit a composite function consisting of separate Schechter func...

We analyze samples of nearby clusters taken from the Abell catalog and the Xray Sample of Bright Clusters (De Grandi et al 1999) including a wide range of Xray luminosities. Using the usually adopted background subtraction procedures, we find that galaxies in clusters selected by means of their X-ray emission show a flat luminosity function (faint end slope α ≃ −1.1) consistent with that derive...
متن کاملThe Faint End of the Luminosity Function in Clusters
I review recent measurements of the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function in galaxy clusters. Evidence is presented that the luminosity function of galaxies in the central parts of clusters is remarkably constant between clusters and that this luminosity function is steep at bright and faint magnitudes and shallow in-between. The curvature is highly significant – neither a power-law nor a...
متن کاملThe local space density of dwarf galaxies
We estimate the luminosity function of Ðeld galaxies over a range of 10 mag for ([22 \ M BJ \ [12 km s~1 Mpc~1) by counting the number of faint APM galaxies around Stromlo-APM redshift H 0 \ 100 survey galaxies at known distance. The faint end of the luminosity function rises steeply at M BJ B [15, implying that the space density of dwarf galaxies is at least 2 times larger than predicted by a ...
متن کاملThe cluster galaxy luminosity function at z = 0 . 3 : a recent origin for the faint - end upturn ?
We derive deep luminosity functions (to Mz = −15) for galaxies in Abell 1835 (z = 0.25) and AC 114 (z = 0.31) and compare these with the local z luminosity function for 69 clusters. The data show that the faint-end upturn, the excess of galaxies above a single Schechter function at Mz < −17, does not exist in the higher redshift clusters. This suggests that the faint-end upturn galaxies have be...
